- World Tour 2012 -

Welcome on our website!
We are Jennifer Kessy and April Ross, a beach volleyball team representing our country, the United States of America. We're glad you found our page!

Hopefully you've made it out to a domestic or FIVB tournament to see us play, but if not there will be plenty of opportunities in the near future as we are engaged in a quest to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics. We ended the season 2011 ranked 4th in the world.

We still have a lot to work on if we want to secure our spot in the Olympics this time around, but we pride ourselves on working hard and if you add in our determination, commitment and competitiveness we believe we have a good shot.

Our journey will start again in the Spring of 2012, but there will be plenty of things going on in the off-season, so keep up with us right here through our blogs, pictures, videos and if we leave anything out you can send us questions in our Q&A section. Thanks for following us and we hope to see you at a tournament cheering for us soon!

It’s tough to get back into competition mode after two months off and three months of practice, just proven by our latest showing in the FIVB Brasilia Open. We came in feeling really good, arrived three days early, got in three good practices at the venue and showed up ready to play the first day of competition. First round we drew a new, but good Brazilian team and handled them pretty well, won in two sets.celebrating our first win Second round we played Greece, an athletic veteran FIVB team- my jump serve was feeling really in rhythm which always helps and we played well winning again in two. That night we rested, ate, watched video and got a good nights sleep, same as is our normal routine on tour.

trying everything possible at the net The next morning we had Talita/Maria from Brazil, we knew they were playing really well based on their video and we came ready to compete, which we did. Unfortunately we gave away a lead at the end of the first set giving it away. In the second we played better and took it in a close finish again. On to the third, having won the second we felt ready for the third, confident and aggressive, but somehow we ended up going down 0-5! That’s NEVER happened to us before and I still can’t explain why it happened. Maybe we were a little too confident and relaxed going into the third? Is that a bad thing? I guess it might be. They are naturally going to try to raise their game because they just lost and maybe we should have been a little more on the defensive to start out the third. Thinking and more thinking, that’s really what beach volleyball is. Anyway, we clawed our way back to within two points, but but couldn’t muster any more and we ended up with less points than them in the end.... A frustrating match to say the LEAST.

Dropping into the loser’s bracket at that point we felt we’d be able to grovel our way back to the semis that way, like we have in the past, but it wasn’t to be. We drew the Netherlands number one team, and again, we went in ready to pounce on them from the beginning, but unexplainably the opposite happened. They pounced on us and we couldn’t stop the bleeding in the first. We came back, played great in the second and won easily. Those games are the weirdest and you never know what’s going to happen in the third. Adopting the same demeanor we had in the second set, we gained the advantage early, the rest of the game was close, they would score a point and we’d earn it back, but in the end they just scored more points than we did.

We definitely weren’t happy with the results of the second day, even though at times we felt our level of play was very high. It just needs to be that high more consistently....tell me something I don’t know. But going back to my first point, I think it’s simply getting back into the rhythm of competition. A few better decisions here and there and maybe we would have been standing on the podium in the end, but I believe that will come. The lessons learned here will hopefully help us get back into the swing of things for the upcoming Grand Slams in China, until then, back to the grind!

April Ross and Jennifer Kessy started to play together as a team in 2007. Previously committed to playing with different partners, they hadn't planned to start the season together. But circumstances made them both in urgent need of a teammate at the beginning of 2007. And they found each other...

Since then they've played in more than 100 tournaments together, on both the FIVB World Tour and the USA Domestic Tour.

In 2007 and 2008, Jen and April fought to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The qualification process stipulates that no more than two teams per country can participate in the Olympic Games for beach volleyball. Jen and April were the 5th best team in the world but 2 other American teams were still ahead of them in the ranking, Misty May/Kerri Walsh and Nicole Branagh/Elaine Young.
After the disappointment of missing out on the Olympics by such a small margin, they decided their dream of participating to the Olympic Games would hopefully become reality in 2012.
Jen and April still had some great finishes during this time. Especially in Stavanger, Norway, where they won their first title in a Grand Slam. It was in 2007 when they had to go all the way through country quota, qualification, and main draw to become the lowest seeded team ever to win a Grand Slam. They had two other titles in the end of 2008, during the Asian leg of the World Tour, in Sanya, China and Phuket, Thailand.

Season 2009 was a milestone for team Ross/Kessy as they gained their first major title together by winning the FIVB World Championships! It was in Stavanger, again! And on the 4th of July. Jen and April had an extraordinary 2009 season as they won 4 AVP titles and 2 more FIVB titles, making a total of 7 for this single year. It was at the beginning of this season that they started to work with their coach, Jeff Conover. Jen and April finished 3rd in the world ranking this year.

In 2010, they started the AVP tour better than ever, winning 4 events in a row. They won 2 of the 4 in their native Southern California, Huntington Beach and Hermosa Beach. They also won 2 tournaments internationally, in Shanghai and Rome.
Unfortunately, the year they are performing their best domestically is also the year AVP cancelled the second half of the season, depriving Jen and April of tournaments such as Manhattan Beach, San Francisco and Chicago.
Nevertheless, Jen and April had a couple of podium finishes in the second part of the season, including a silver medal in Moscow's Grand Slam and a bronze in Sanya, China. At the end of 2010, they were the 4th best team in the world.

Well, let's see... I grew up in Costa Mesa, I still live there, and I love it! I have one sister who I'm very close with and my dad is still super supportive of my volleyball career and comes to almost all my tournaments.
My mom passed away of breast cancer in 2001 and I believe she's still watching over me, if you see me tap my chest twice and point to the sky after a lucky play, one's for her and one's for God for helping us win the point.

I went to Kaiser Elementary, Ensign Middle School, and Newport Harbor High School before going the the University of Southern California. I played club ball at Orange County Volleyball Club- it was grueling, I hated it while I was there because it was so physically and mentally draining, but I'm so glad I stuck with it because ut made me a better player than I could have been if no one had really pushed me and it taught me the value of hard work in life and volleyball. If it's tough it's usually worth it.

Growing up my family would go camping every summer in Yosemite and it's still my favorite place on the planet that I've visited thus far. The memories I gained during those trips are absolutely priceless. Camping continues to be one of my favorite pastimes, camping in the Grand Canyon is definitely on my bucket list, it's so close to where I live I can't believe I've never been!

I love, love, love to snowboard, too bad it's not the safest thing to do... Sun Valley, Idaho is the best place I've ever snowboarded, I can't wait to go back this winter! I've picked up sewing in the past couple years, it's something my mom taught me how to do and I have a great passion for it, a goal of mine is to eventually make my own playing suits. I also enjoy scrapbooking (yes, I'm a dork) and of course shopping... I can shop all day, it's more of a talent than a past time :) .

And last but not least, the next step in my personal life will be marrying my fiancé, Brad Keenan. We are getting married on November 20th and I can't wait!!
If you want to know anything else shoot me a question in our Q&A section !

I was born and raised in Orange County, California in a small town about a mile from the beach. I have two younger brothers, Ryan and Travis. They both have dark hair and brown eyes but if you look closely you can see the resemblance. I credit them for my crazy competitiveness. I never let them win, ever, at anything.

My first sport growing up was gymnastics. I could flip and twirl with the best of them. I won the teams pull up contest, they stopped me at 40!! I definitely think this is where I became explosive and a little graceful.
Then there was my next love softball, I was a pitcher. One of my favorite memories as a kid is doing 100 pitches with my dad every night in front of the house. This taught me that practice makes perfect.
I also played soccer at the same time. I was a defender and super aggressive.
Then with all of these sports going at the same time I asked my mom to try volleyball on sundays at San Clemente high school. She said "no way you have too much going on". I begged and begged her until she gave in. After the first practice I was hooked. I quit soccer, gymnastics, and softball.

I started riding my bike to the beach everyday in the summer and playing until sunset. I was lucky enough to go to the same beach where all the "pros" were training. I got to watch Karch Kirally, Adam Johnson, and all the greats practice on the next court over from where I was playing pickup games.

Then from there I played high school indoor ball at Dana Hills and received a scholarship to play at USC. I was a history major with an emphasis is art. I was also in a sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma. Having a "normal" life outside of volleyball has always been important to me.

In my personal life I enjoy travel. I love taking pictures and exploring new cities. I am obsessed with old buildings, old brick, old keys, old windows, old jewelry, anything with a story. I have also started learning French. It's a slow and humbling process but I will learn!

My family and I all live within 10 minutes of each other. We love going down to the harbor and hanging on my parents boat. My family is the most important thing in my life. I'm sure if you've been to an AVP event you have met them.

So this is my life in short, if you want more info, don't hesitate to post a question on the "Questions" page.

Hi Ladies,i know your schedule is full this year, how many domestic tourneys do you plan to play? Thank you,see you on the beach!
April: Hi Randy, the amount of domestic tournaments we decide to play in depends on a few factors, our main goal is to qualify for the Olympics, but it's looking like we will play in the NVL at the Preakness in MD and possibly in a Wide Open in Huntington and then a few more NVLs in Sept/Oct at the very least. We will be sure to update our schedule when we know!

April: Hi Christy! Glad you like our webpage! If you want to watch the pro's practice you can usually find them in Hermosa Beach between 1st and 4th street or in Huntington Beach at the pier most mornings during the week. Good luck!

Kenneth coker, from TN, wrote :
Is there a way to get an autographed photo of the two of you? I'd gladly send return postage.
April: Hey Kenneth, to get an autographed photo you can either send us your address or you can send an envelope addressed to you with postage and possibly the picture you want signed to USA volleyball at 200 Pier Ave., Unit 134
Hermosa Beach, CA 90254, from there they will make sure we get it and then we can send it back to you. Thanks for visiting the website!
Renae schultz, from Ohio, wrote :
What is your team's favorite pump up song that you listen to before you play?
JenGood question!!! Right now we love LMFAO's Shufflin. It changes a lot but right now that sounds makes us move, dance, and relax before the match.
Julka, from Poland, wrote :
Will you play in Poland- Stare Jabłonki next year? I will cheer USA teams. How well-being and health?:)
JenI hope we will be playing in Stare next year. We were in the finals this year and hope to get back and win next year. I hope it fits in the schedule!
Paul, from Poland, wrote :
Hi Jen and April. Do you train beach volleyball all time or only in summer and spring? And do you have a coach? I think all teams have the coach, but I am not sure. :)
Good luck , and I hope that we will see in the next year in Poland:)
JenApril and I train almost all year. We take most of November and December off of volleyball but are in the gym lifting, doing cardio, or doing yoga. We start full time volleyball in January and go all the way to the first week in November.
We have a coach named Jeff Conover. He has been with us for 3 years and have had a lot of success as a team. We are the only USA team who has a full-time coach who travels to all the events. We are very lucky to have him.
Chizzy, from Michigan, wrote :
Congrats to you and April on your 3rd swords. You and April are my favorite team!! I love your athleticism and "Go for it" attitude! I really miss your "power" jump serve. I think you and April would be unstoppable if you both were bringing to heat with your serves! Why are you using the jump float more now?
JenThanks for your kind words and advice. Sometimes we look at the other team and see if they like to pass the float serve or the jump serve. It is also good to mix up our serving and give team a different look. If we both jump serve every time, they will know what is coming every time. Also with the change of the volleyball the float serve has become almost more difficult to pass, especially in the wind. If they ever change the ball to a more true beach ball you have my word that I will jump serve every ball.
Mike Beckmann, from Kirkwood, MO., wrote :
Do you both think you have a chance to eventually become the new number one team?
April: Hi Mike! We definitely believe we have a chance to become number one, it's always our goal!
John Leou, from Irvine, wrote :

April: Hi John, I have been to Singapore, I went with Brad and my sister a few years ago and we actually took a train from Malaysia! It was a very adventurous experience :) Say hi to Ms. Martin for me!
Paul , from Georgia, wrote :
How is your mindset going into the World Champs this time different as the defending champions?
Joey, from Chicago, wrote :
I don't even know what you call it, but how did your hand clapping thing come about?
JenIt totally came about organically. At one point one hand slap wasn't enough and I guess this one just felt right. Other people try it but it only feels right with April!!
Verena, from Austria, wrote :
Is the sand sometimes very hot?
If so, how can you play on it?
JenThe sand can become extremely hot in the middle of the day. It also depends on the color and thickness of the grains. If the sand is too hot the tournament is usually prepared with hoses to water down the courts. Sometimes the heat can sneak up on you and blister your feet without you knowing. That's what pedicures are for!!!

Jen Hi John interesting question. The next time I come into class I will bring my map of the world that I have colored in every country I have visited. I have a few more I need to color in but you will see I have been a lot of places but I have a lot more to see. Say hi to Ms. Martin!!!
Jon C, from Oakland, CA, wrote :
Hey there! I'm a huge fan of you both, and I'm glad you have a new website! Question: How does a vertically challenged player like me (5'9") get competitive on the beach?
Jen Good Question!! I am about 6 feet tall and have never had a problem with being short in volleyball until recently. With all the young players coming up and being 6'3 and above I have had the feeling I need to adapt and change my mentality a little, I am not the big girl anymore, I need to be smarter. I played with beach greats Barbara Fontana and Holly McPeak who were considered small for the beach game but they were the best! They had every shot in the book and they knew how and when to use them. They also perfected the pass, set, and serve. Everything that was in their control they mastered.
So my advice to you is be precise with all your shots, passes, sets, and serves. Big players can get away with a little laziness sometimes but you cannot.
Also remember that a small hitter/shooter can be very frustrating to a big blocker or defender.
Good Luck!!!!

How are you going to feel if I eat 330 pieces of sour skittles?
Jen HI John. I think I would feel fine with you eating 330 pieces of sour skittles but you will feel very sick and your mouth will hurt very bad. Maybe start with 20 pieces and tell me how you feel.
John L., from Irvine, wrote :

Angela , from Miami, wrote :
Hey Jen and April, what made you two decide to give it a go and become a team?
Jen It's a complicated story. We were both committed to play with other partners for the season when both of our partners were unable to play in the first event of the season due to injury and other obligations. So we decided to pair up two weeks before the first tourney in Miami. We practiced a few times and made it all the way to the finals of our first tournament. The rest is history!
Michael, from Houston, wrote :
Hey Jen and April, congrats on everything you girls have accomplished! I'm a huge fan! My question is, who pays for ya'll to go to play in the different events? I mean like travel accomodations, like airfare, and hotel. Thank you!
Jen We pay for all of our travel within the US. Sometimes at the speciality events our hotel is payed for but usually it's out of our own pockets. When we travel for the fivb we are paying for our own tickets. Then when you are in the maindraw your hotel is payed for while you are still playing. Some of us get USA volleyball travel money but it's usually not enough to cover all the expenses.
Katie, from Dayton, OH, wrote :
Great job in Cincy! You guys came out on top, but, what did you guys think of the venue? Heard it was way smaller than the previous location; seemed confined. Great for us fans, just curious as to what the players thought.
Jen: As the venue was much, much smaller the fans were still great. I think it was important to start small and work for a bigger event in the future. It was very intimate and had an old school feel. The players were very pleased and can't wait to come back next year.
Michelle, from New Jersey, wrote :
How did you both start playing beach volleyball? Did you start indoor? I love you two!
Jen: I started played beach as soon as I started playing indoor, which was in 8th grade. The club I started playing for in San Clemente also had beach camps in the summer that I loved. But I really started leaning the game after college.
